Easy DIY Terrariums

Large succulent planter outside GRT’s Scale Shack

We made these terrariums using clean sand and gravel from our plant to give to our customers as gifts. (Note that all materials aside from the succulents would have gone into the landfill before!)

These planters make a fun project to do with kids, or to give as a handmade gift to friends or family. They are super easy to care for, do well indoors or out and are happy on windowsills, desks, and patios.

You need:

  • An old glass or jar (empty glass from a used-up soy candle work great, too)

  • Sand

  • A few ounces of soil

  • Gravel, beach glass, shells or stones

  • A few succulent plants - if you have Hens & Chicks growing in your garden (or you know someone who does!), gently tug some of the babies out of the ground to separate. Try to ensure the root remains somewhat intact

Directions:

  • Soak the roots of your uprooted succulents in a dish of water while you prepare the terrariums

  • Line the bottom of the glass with gravel or small rocks for drainage

  • Add a layer of sand on top

  • Add your soil, and then poke some holes in the soil using your finger or a utensil

  • Sprinkle a very small amount of water into the soil

  • Gently place succulents into the holes, trying to get the roots facing down. Tuck extra soil around the plants to secure them

  • Top your terrarium garden with rocks, glass, gravel, etc.

  • Water sparingly every couple of weeks
