Meet the who’s who of Nanaimo’s W2R Hub!

The founding family behind ABC Recycling. Photo taken from Glassdoor.

Who knew — Duke Point is turning into a waste-to-resource (W2R) hub!

Including GRT, this thin peninsula on the southeast edge of the City of Nanaimo hosts at least six businesses that turn '“trash” into treasures. What joy to learn more about these excellent neighbours and W2R peers. Read on if you’d like to learn more - and get ready for some neighbourly love!

West Coast Reduction Ltd. operates a rendering plant that support the hake fisheries and aquaculture industry by converting their waste into animal feed and other valuable products. They literally make food out of garbage, and at very significant volumes. We love their tagline “Nothing left behind”. Check out their BC Place stat at https://lnkd.in/gh843gsn

Congratulations to ABC Recycling on being a fourth-generation family business. ABC recycle scrap metal, including appliances, end-of-life vehicles and most other scrap metal products that might otherwise end up in landfills. Read about their history, values and continued growth on their website: https://lnkd.in/gWugX2Uq

Cascades Recovery+ define themselves as a discarded material management company (not a waste management company); a very cool distinction. They even produce toilet paper that is 100% recycled! https://lnkd.in/g446ZAsK

Here’s another good one – Duke Point Auto Recyclers offer a clean and modern take on a wrecking yard. Rick and Nathan Stewart take apart old cars and trucks, recover the parts and sell them locally and around the world on eBay. Reuse before wrecking, indeed. https://lnkd.in/gnZU3PdB

And the new, super-innovators on the block? Convertus Group are on a mission to achieve the best and highest use and value out of waste organic material. They convert this waste into renewable natural gas, fertilisers and compost for re-use in the agricultural sector. https://lnkd.in/gwi_DUHt

Are you inspired, too? This is what we need to be doing, y’all! We can’t wait for the day that hubs like this become the norm, versus the exception!
